Uganda Suspends Science Scholarships Plan
The Ugandan government has
suspended plans to offer most state-funded university scholarships to
science students. The policy was intended to raise Uganda's scientific
capacity by allocating 3,000 of the 4,000 scholarships granted by the
government for science programs deemed critical to national development.
Priority was going to be given to engineering, chemical engineering,
information and communication technology engineering, human and veterinary
medicine, electronics and information technology. The plan was
canceled after protests that it would severely damage non-scientific
professions.
