 New Book Announcement

Secretary General's Corner

Exciting news has been happening in IACEE. Our test project in China of certifying continuing engineering education centers is underway. Under the leadership of past presidents John Klus, University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Markku Markkula, Helsinki University of Technology, and IACEE First Vice President Feng Changgen, China Association for Science and Technology, initial visits have occurred and guidelines have been established. Next month, the IACEE Council will attend an information symposium on the project in Beijing. In the May issue of this newsletter, I will share with you the latest information on the project.

As you might have noticed, there is a new design to the newsletter. This is part of our efforts to revitalize activity within the IACEE membership. I encourage you to share information with members at large by submitting items of interest to the newsletter. (Send information to info@iacee.org.) In this issue, you can read of how UNAMs School of Engineering (headed by IACEE Council member Gerardo Ferrando) won a prestigious award in Mexico for their innovative curriculum in the field of preservation of energetic resources and environment.

If you havent yet done so, I encourage you to send in your renewal for IACEE Membership. IACEE is a broad and diverse community, and we value each members participation in our efforts to improve continuing engineering education. Also, you will receive the members registration rate at the April 2006 World Conference on Continuing Engineering Education in Vienna. If you have not received your renewal, or if you have any questions, please contact Jennifer Johnson at j.johnson@iacee.org.

I remain interested in your thoughts and input. Please feel free to contact me with your ideas on how IACEE can be involved in the CEE community in your area. I look forward to hearing from each of you.

With regards,

Frank L. Huband

IACEE Secretary General

Papers of Interest to Continuing Engineering Education

We continue our focus on papers presented at the 9th WCCEE in Tokyo.  This month we discuss the papers that won the Glen L. Martin Award and the Biedenbach Award.

Please click on each title to read the full paper note that you will need to have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer to read the files (to download a free copy, click here).  If you have a paper that you would like to share with the IACEE community, please contact the newsletter at info@iacee.org.

General Motors: Building World-Class Technical Capability Through Global Academic Partnerships by Diane Landsiedel, winner of the Glen L. Martin Award

This paper describes the General Motors Technical Education Program (TEP) that has provided distance education in current and emerging technologies to North American employees for twenty years.  Experts from GM and academia work together to create multi-university, job-related plans of study leading to scientific and technical certificates and degrees.  Since its inception, 5,400 North American employees have earned degree, certificates, and academic achievement awards through TEP.

From Service to Common Purpose by Dr. Christopher Padfield, winner of the Biedenbach Award

This paper examines the idea of Continuing Engineering Education (CEE) as a service business that identifies industrial needs and meets them and how to develop longer-lasting relationships between universities and companies based upon mutual benefit.  He suggest that while it is important to develop an understanding of customers and to deliver a service to them, higher value is delivered to our institutions, and to society, by pursuing common purpose.

Articles of Interest to Continuing Engineering Education

UNAMs Engineering School Wins Mexicos National Prize of Electrical Energy Saving

In a ceremony on February 3, 2005, Ms. In Sc. Gerardo Ferrando Bravo, principal of The National Autonomous University of Mexico Engineering School (UNAM), received the National Prize of Electric Energy Saving from President of the Republic, BA. Vicente Fox.   UNAM has been preparing professionals for the rational use of energy in the programs for bachelor and post graduate degrees, as well as in continuing education for several years.  This task has been done by promoting fundamental concepts as the rational use of energy and environmental impact, in the design for the different branches of engineering, and in specific subjects of curricular programs of electrical, mechanical and industrial engineering.

IIT-Bombay and National University of Singapore Agree to Offer Joint Masters and Doctoral Level Programs

The Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay and the National University of Singapore (NUS) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Singapore today to establish a joint degree program at the Masters and Doctoral levels.  The MOU provides the framework for both NUS and IIT-B to work on programs leading to joint Masters and Ph.D. degrees in Advanced Engineering Materials, training human resources relevant to the number of industrial sectors in both countries.

MIT Expands Remote Labs to Africa

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology received an $800,000 grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York to expand its iLabs remote laboratory program to include three African universities.  Makerere University in Uganda, the University of Dar Es Salaam in Tanzania, and Obafemi Awolowo University in Nigeria, along with five other remote labs, will allow students to participate in real science and engineering experiments over the Internet.  The African partners, along with MIT, will select the new iLabs and develop new content in several graduate and undergraduate courses in electrical engineering and physics.

Engineering Education Not Gender Sensitive

The Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN) is demanding sweeping reforms in the nations job market that will equate them with their male counterparts.  APWENs mission is to encourage young girls and women to study science and engineering.  Engineer Patricia Iheanacho, President of APWEN, said, It is one thing to study and another thing for these captains of industry to be willing to give these females an opportunity to show their skills and knowledge."

New Book Announcement

Methods and Technologies for Learning, edited by  G. Chiazzese, A. Chifari, S. Ottaviano and M. Allegra

This volume features over 90 papers and poster presentations and provides an overview of international perspectives regarding the latest innovations and results in various fields of education.  The wide variety of contributions provides an interesting and useful account of some of the major issues and controversies facing researchers, academics, educational scientists and technologists in most of the educational contexts in which ICT is applied. The book is addressed to all those who are interested in exploring methodologies and extending their knowledge of current research in education and training technologies.
