Newsletter for October 2003

IACEE Secretary General's Corner

Dear IACEE Members:

Recently, the IACEE Executive Committee met to discuss methods in which IACEE could better serve its members. We will be working on developing a survey to see what is important to you, what you would like IACEE to accomplish, and what goals you would like IACEE to address.

One method that has recently been instituted is a new forum on the IACEE website, (click here to access the forum page), to facilitate discussion on topics of concern to engineering educators. I encourage you to use this forum as a means to learn about different teaching styles, share upcoming events, and discuss your thoughts on possible research. This can be also be a valuable tool to use as a way of connecting with educators from countries that have emerging continuing engineering education programs.

A second method that IACEE is developing, (which President Alfredo Soeiro spoke to you about briefly in last month's newsletter), is a program to determine standards of certification on continuing engineering education programs. IACEE is investigating the type of standards that would be used, and methods of certifying various university programs. Please let me know your thoughts and suggestions on this matter.

As always, I welcome your input on how IACEE could better serve you.

Papers on Continuing Engineering Education

The European Society for Engineering Education (SEFI) recently held their annual conference in September with a focus on the Global Engineer. Several excellent papers on engineering education were presented, of which a few are listed below. To view more papers from this conference, or to view PowerPoint presentations, please see http://www.sefi2003.com: the papers are under "Conference Information - Publications."

Please click on each title to read the full paper - note that you will need to have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer to read the files (to download a free copy, click here). If you have a paper that you would like to share with the IACEE community, please contact the newsletter at iacee@asee.org.

ALE: The International Active Learning in Engineering Education Network (presented at SEFI 2003)
ALE is an informal international collaboration between engineering educational institutions dedicated to improving engineering education. The network was initiated in 2000 and has until now participation from important universities in Europe and South and North America. The ALE mission is to bring active learning back into engineering education, and the cooperation is based on workshops and joint projects in between.

Global Education - Lifelong Learning (presented at SEFI 2003)
This paper explores the facilities of global learning and global education in Helsinki University of Technology. It will settle out the fundamenta that the students have when they attend global academic education as well as multinational scientific and commercial projects.

Transforming Engineering Education from the Maintaining Mode of Operation to the Development Mode of the Global Industry
(presented at SEFI 2003)
The paper describes the results of the ongoing R&D work in Finland, which has been carried out as a combination of theoretical and experimental work since 1993. The work is aimed at developing and implementing a new structure for engineering education (EE) and for engineering education institutions.

IEI's Successful Approach to Stimulating Continuing Professional Development
(presented at SEFI 2003)
The Institution of Engineers of Ireland (IEI) is the professional body for engineering professionals in Ireland. In a review of its CPD Policies in 1999, the Institution decided to develop a CPD Accreditation Scheme for Engineering Employeers, as a means of stimulating lifelong learning for engineers.

Spotlight on Members

Do you have an interesting project in the field of engineering education that you would like to share with fellow IACEE members? We want to showcase papers or information from IACEE members in this newsletter. To submit articles/items of information, please contact Jennifer Johnson.

Award Nominations Due November 7!

At each World Conference on Continuing Engineering Education, IACEE presents two Awards recognizing international achievement in continuing engineering education. For more information, or to download a nomination form, please click on the title of each award.

IACEE Biedenbach Distinguished Lectureship Award
