INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR
CONTINUING ENGINEERING EDUCATION

Newsletter for May 2003

Note from the IACEE Secretary General

IACEE strives to be an accurate, authoritative source of information in the field of continuing engineering education. This is the goal of all members of the IACEE Council. With the first meeting in 2003 of the full Council, I wanted to let you know some of the topics that we will be working on, to better the association.

Our current bylaws were last revised in 2001. We are going to take a close look at these bylaws, updating them to reflect the changes that have happened to the association in the last couple of years. We will incorporate Rules of Order to follow.

In order to keep IACEE vital and active, we hope to establish a plan of action to both increase the membership level and the participation of our current members. With the election of new officers coming up at the 9th WCCEE, we hope to establish guidelines for candidates. In keeping with this thought, please give some consideration to possible candidates for these elections.

The information that comes out of this meeting will be posted on the IACEE web site. I hope that you will keep checking this site for updated information on IACEE happenings, upcoming conferences, and new working groups. Please consider submitting information and articles for both the web site, and this newsletter, so that IACEE continues to be the voice of continuing engineering education the world over.

As always, I welcome your comments and questions, and look forward to hearing from you.

Frank L. Huband
IACEE Secretary General

9th World Confernce on Continuing Engineering Education

The 9th WCCEE, sponsored by IACEE and co-sponsored by the Science Council of Japan and the Japanese Society for Engineering Education, will be held in Tokyo on 15-20 May 2004. With the theme of "Strategy of Continuing Engineering Education for International Competence and Cooperation," the conference will address such topics as case studies for CPD, CEE in developing countries, and knowledge management. Abstracts and workshop proposals are due by 1 October 2003. Please visit the conference website by clicking here.

Papers on Continuing Engineering Education

One key towards quality continuing engineering education programs is the involvement of industry. Utilizing executives from industrial corporations allows education to incorporate what industry needs from their future employees. This month's papers focuses on the use of non-traditional faculty.

Please click on each title to read the full paper - note that you will need to have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer to read the files (to download a free copy, click here). If you have a paper that you would like to share with the IACEE community, please contact the newsletter at info@iacee.org.

Industry Expectations of New Engineers - A Survey to Assist Curriculum Designers
Very often surveys, such as those which attempt to capture and quantify industry expectations of the attributes (i.e., skills, knowledge, and experience) for entry level engineering employees, can provide key data useful for determining objectives and helpful in designing curricula to meet the objectives.

Issues in Professional Practice and their Impentation in Engineering Curricula
A successful career in engineering is dependant not only on the engineer's technical expertise, experience, and ability to solve problems, it is also imperative to have the acumen to foresee and manage many of the nontechnical issues which are integral to the successful management of any project.

University/Industry Partnership: Customized Electrical Engineering Fundamentals Program for Non-Electrical Engineers at Delco Electronics
Engineering curriculum must stay abreast with changes taking place throughout industry in the way products are designed, developed, and manufactured.

Understanding and Utilizing Adjunct Professors for Non-traditional Engineering and Technology Graduate Education
Re-envisioning adjunct faculty members for non-traditional engineering graduate education is developing ways to effect a national dialogue on how to re-envision and position engineering graduate education to meet both the technology and societal needs of the 21st century.

Involving Industry in the Design of Courses, Programs, and a Systems Engineering and Engineering Management Department
Through a unique partnership with industry and selected government agencies in the area of short courses, graduate programs, and applied research, the department has grown to over 60 masters and 30 PhD students in one year.

Articles on Distance Education/Technology

A recent article on the web site for the International Council for Open and Distance Education discusses changes in electronic education. Entitled "e-Learning Changes,' by Guus Wijngaards, Deputy Director of European SchoolNet, the article talks about changes that the European community needs to make in order to integrate new technology into the fields of teaching and learning. Please click here for more on this article.

Apogee Interactive, Inc. recently released a first-ever Web-based "Situational Spanish" course for energy industry employees. This course teaches words and phrases necessary to communicate with Hispanic customers and contract crews in utility company settings. For more information on this course, please click here.

The International Society for Technology in Education has elected their 2003-2004 board of directors. New board members include Christine Jager, St. Cuthbert's College in New Zealand, and Trina Davis, eEducation at Texas A&M University. Please click here for the full listing of the ISTE board.
