Newsletter for March 2003 |
Note from the IACEE President As President of IACEE, I am addressing the members and others to the developments of the association. The Executive Committee met in Tucson on the 27th of January and a part of the meeting addressed the future of the association. It was decided to propose to the Council several activities. The first one consists of creating a database on experts in CEE among its members. This database aims at the provision of services in CEE like consultancy on quality or on e-learning. The association is very rich in terms of expertise around the world that can be used in more efficient way. Another development is the production of a guidebook about CEE management organized in a manner identical to the handbook produced by the CPD division of ASEE some years ago. The contributions from members are fundamental for this publication and cooperation with other organizations involved in continuing education will be implemented. A third area of activity for the 2003 is the preparation of the workshops on CEE for the Tokyo conference. These training activities are important for members and for newcomers, and the conferences are an excellent opportunity to have them. All these activities are planned for the benefit of the members and of IACEE. The suggestions from members are welcome to improve IACEE. Another aspect that is important for the association is the elections for the Council in May of 2004. As you probably know, the election procedure has changed since the new By-Laws were approved in Toronto. Therefore, I would request your participation in the nomination of candidates and to contact the Secretary General, Dr. Frank Huband. Alfredo
Soeiro 9th World Confernce on Continuing Engineering Education The 9th WCCEE, sponsored by IACEE and co-sponsored by the Science Council of Japan and the Japanese Society for Engineering Education, will be held in Tokyo on 15-20 May 2004. Abstracts and workshop proposals are due by 1 October 2003. Please visit the conference website by clicking here. |
Papers on Continuing Engineering Education This month's papers focuses on the trends and challenges that occur in electronic course delivery methods. Many institutions face these challenges for both graduate and undergraduate students, and have been innovative in their approaches to solutions. Please click on each title to read the full paper - note that you will need to have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer to read the files (to download a free copy, click here). If you have a paper that you would like to share with the IACEE community, please contact the newsletter at info@iacee.org. Distance

Engineering & Technology Articles on Distance Education/Technology "The National Strategy to Secure Cyberspace," a White House report recently released, describes the central role of universities in protecting computer networks from attacks by terrorists and hackers. Campuses were urged to strengthen their firewalls and to work with students to prevent computer labs from being used to launch cyberattacks, according to Dan Carnevale, writing for the Chronicle of Higher Education. No specific increase in funding was recommended, but it underlines the importance of an already-signed bill which, if appropriated, would bring $902.8 million to research in this area. This month's item is from academic institutional member Stanford Center for Professional Development, in Stanford, California, USA. Stanford - Singapore: Distance Education Addresses Global Challenges On Feb. 24, officials at Stanford and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore signed an agreement to bring Stanford's expertise in environmental engineering to Asia via collaborative teaching and research. The effort uses distance learning to train the Pacific Rim's future environmental leaders and address some of the world's toughest environmental challenges. "The program gives Stanford an entree into critical and interesting environmental problems in Southeast Asia, such as challenges to provide clean water and deal with contaminants from insuctrialization," said James Leckie, the C.L. Peck, Class of 1906 Professor in the School of Engineering, in an interview prior to the signing ceremony. The ceremony took place via video teleconference between Stanford and Singapore, where Leckie was on hand for the signing. To read more about this program, please click here. |
