NEWSLETTER FOR JANUARY 2003 |
Note from the IACEE Secretary General Thank you for the responses to the December inaugural newsletter. We are pleased that you have found the format favorable. If you wish to refer back to the first newsletter, please know that it is available at the IACEE site, www.iacee.org. Continue to send your comments and any submissions for the newsletter to me at f.huband@iacee.org. We have sent out membership invoices, and you should have received your invoice from us by at least two of the following methods: fax, e-mail, and hard copy mail. Because we have heard back from several members of their preference for paying membership dues by bank transfer, we will be happy to re-send invoices to anyone who has not yet renewed membership, prefers this method of payment, and notifies us at info@iacee.org. The Executive Committee has waived all previously unpaid dues, and thus you need only pay your dues for 2003. I am pleased to say that the transition for the administrative home of IACEE has gone smoothly. We are working on an update of the website, and will continue to try to keep all of you informed of the latest information on continuing engineering education via the newsletter. At the end of this month, the Executive Committee will meet in Tucson, AZ, and I will give you an update on this meeting next month. I would ask that you review the IACEE site at http://www.iacee.org, and let us know your thoughts on how to improve the site. We will be adding a forum in the upcoming months, but would like to know what information you would like to see offered. One new feature that we have added is an updated listing of current members, both institutional and individual. I look forward to hearing your comments and suggestions. Frank
L. Huband 9th World Conference on Continuing Engineering Education The 9th WCCEE, sponsored by IACEE and co-sponsored by the Science Council of Japan and the Japanese Society for Engineering Education, will be held in Tokyo on 15-20 May 2004. With the theme of "Strategy of Continuing Engineering Education for International Competence and Cooperation," the conference will address such topics as case studies for CPD, CEE in developing countries, and knowledge management. Abstracts and workshop proposals are due by 1 October 2003. Please visit the conference website by clicking here. |
Papers on Continuing Engineering Education This month's papers focuses on the many changes that are taking place in engineering and engineering education. Progress of technology, global business practices, reform and reinvention - all are part of challenge of change that engineers and engineering educators face. Please note that you will need to have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer to read the files (to download a free copy, click here). Industry Expectations for Engineers: the Impact of Global Manufacturing Articles on Distance Education/Technology A consortium of Canadian engineering groups has launched a multimedia campaign to show secondary students the importance of engineering and that the field requires a diverse field of knowledge, including math and science skills. As described in an article in the December 2002 issue of Engineering Times, the program is intended to draw a broad cross-section of Canadian youth to the profession. The campaign web site is anchored by a female cartoon character who leads young student into the world of engineering through interactive exploration. A teacher resource kit is available to try to lure teachers and guidance counselors into using the program in their classrooms and counseling. See http://www.generation-e.ca. A study suggests that up to 14% of Australian university students may be pirating material off the Internet for their essays, according to an article in the Chronicle by Andrea Foster. The study used a plagiarism service to analyze 1925 essays provided by six Australian universities. The software detected that 166 of the essays, or 8.6% of the total examined, had more than a quarter of their material pilfered from electronic sources. Fourteen percent of the essays had 5% or more of the material plagiarized. The material was plagiarized from hundreds of Internet sites, including five well-known cheat sites. Plagiarism from other student's electronic papers was also detected. The group conducting the study recommended that universities establish education programs to help students understand what cheating and plagiarism mean. One observer noted that students are referred to Web sites so often that they lose sight of the difference between honest research and plagiarism. See chronicle.com/free/2002/11/2002112001t.htm. Spotlight on Members In each newsletter, we showcase papers or information that have been written or submitted by IACEE members. This month's item is from academic institutional member Stanford Center for Professional Development, in Stanford, California, USA. SCPD-Korea Distance Education Agreement Bridges Stanford and Pacific Rim The Stanford Center for Professional Development (SCPD) and South Korea's Gangnam-Gu district government signed an agreement on October 11, 2002 for the online delivery of Stanford University graduate and professional education engineering, science and engineering management courses to industry students working at companies in Korea's equivalent of California's Silicon Valley. Under the agreement, the Gangnam-Gu district e-learning center will market the program, register students, and coordinate Stanford alumni serving as tutors. For the full press release, click here. |
