IACEE PARTICIPATION (PANELS, MEMBERSHIP MEETING AND WORKSHOP) AT WEEF 2015
IACEE will host a daylong track of three panels, a membership meeting and a workshop at the World Engineering Education Forum (WEEF) in Florence, Italy, to be held on 20-24 September 2015. IACEE is one of the 12 participating organizations of WEEF 2015 that focuses on and addresses the general theme of resilience to varying aspects and scales, and will explore its applicability and value in engineering education and in engineering overall.

14:00-15:30
Panel 1: Innovation and Industry: How Education Fuels Resilience

There has been much talk about how education, particularly engineering education, is a benefit to industry employees and companies alike. The focus for some time has been on retention. However in today's fast moving and global market, industry is increasingly interested in innovation education to create, sustain and grow business.  This panel will share insights from collaborations focused on innovative education between companies and universities as each seeks to support lifelong learning and the bottom line.

Chair:  Paul Marca (Stanford University)
Panelists/Presenters:  Ed Borbely, (University of Michigan), Raouti Chehih, (Euratechnologies), David Butler (HR Thales), Yvonne Leigl, (Tenaris) and Dirk Deuster (Bosch Corporation)

16:00-17:00
Panel 2: Attractiveness of Continuing Engineering Education in Partnership with Industry:  Challenges and Opportunities for Universities

The ingredients for successful strategic partnerships between industry and academia often vary based upon the mission, goals and motivation of the organizations involved. While many partnerships are related to research initiatives, universities in Europe and in the US have partnered with industry to develop continuing engineering education programs for their employees.  In this session panelists will explore the different success and failure factors related to academic/industry partnerships as well as the challenges and opportunities. Is there one recipe, or even some guidelines, that will guarantee success for these special partnerships?

Chair:  Linda Krute (North Carolina State University)
Panelists/Presenters: Patricio Montesinos (Valencia University of Technology), Soma Chakrabarti (University of Delaware), Kim Scalzo (State University of New York)

Workshop: Building and Marketing Continuing Education Programs for Global Engineering Workforce

The purpose of this workshop is to provide the participants with a detailed, step-by-step process for building, marketing and sustaining international continuing engineering education programs that are responsive to the region specific workforce and societal needs. It will introduce the significance of cultural orientation, country specific business practices and learning styles to the participants. The intention of this workshop to provide the participants a list of “must address” issues which will help their organizations build long term partnerships with global organizations. Through collaborative problem-oriented projects during the workshop, the participants will apply the knowledge and the project groups will present the outcome at the end of the workshop.

CHANGING ROLES OF LEARNING: MEETING TODAY’S WORKFORCE REQUIREMENTS FOR TOMORROW’S OPPORTUNITIES
by Nelson Baker, Secretary General and Past President, IACEE and Dean of Georgia Tech Professional Education, USA

Education is no longer just about traditional undergraduate and graduate students. By some estimates, more than half of today’s students pursue postsecondary education well beyond the “traditional” pattern of right after high school.   Further, learning beyond the formative years in a university setting is also not just growing exponentially, but is nearly mandatory to stay current in one’s profession.  With the rapid pace of new knowledge, new business models, one needs to be up-to-date with the latest information and contexts for their profession, knowledge and business.  It is far better to be the disruptor with new ideas than to be disrupted and out-of-business.

Those who embrace this new paradigm of learning, especially with a global perspective, will lead in creating and sustaining new economies that will be tomorrow’s world.  Education through one’s lifetime and career is a strategic asset for everyone.  Being part of the global conversation for this lifelong journey is why I am excited to be part of IACEE and look forward to every opportunity to learn from its members around the globe.

FEANI ENGINEERING CARD AND THE CHALLENGE OF ENHANCING CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT (CPD)
by Alfredo Soeiro, IACEE 2016 Conference Chair, IACEE Past President, and Academic director of Civil Engineering at University of Porto, Portugal

VDI (Association of German Engineers) led an workshop on 22 April 2015 at the VDI Head Office in Duesseldorf, Germany, about the possibility of improving the use of the FEANI Engineering Card with respect to CPD. The participation were from VDI, HIS (Croatian Engineering Association) and EI (Engineers Ireland). This workshop was a logical consequence of a prior workshop about the Engineering Card (EC) held in Gdansk during the FEANI General Assembly of 2014. The two important prerequisites for a successful development of the EC were then defined as (1) an increased marketing through a closer cooperation with the industry and (2) the enhancement of the CPD section in the EC system. Several initiatives about the non-formal and informal learning of engineers in the countries in Europe and around the world were represented. Some case studies such as CPD Accredited Employer Standard (EI), mandatory CPD (EI, APEC Engineer, ASCE), accreditation of CPD Providers (Ordem dos Engenheiros) and CPD providers quality assurance (IACEE Quality Program for Continuing Education) were analyzed. Two issues that need to be addressed are: (1) improving CPD in the EC: question of validating all types of learning (formal, informal and non-formal) with proper assessment of competences and (2) quantification of the CPD for each engineer. These two questions can be answered through systems that are feasible, effective, and record CPD information for engineers.
